A Dolls House, by Henrik Ibsen Essay In the play, A Dolls House, by Henrik Ibsen there seems to include serious social commentary underlying in this piece. This play is obviously critical of the time period, but also presents little or no solutions. The play is critiquing the society of the time for its structured hierarchy of male dominance. The play has placed its blame by skillfully creating characters that bring forth issues of power and control, ignorance and innocence, rebirth, and social status. Throughout the course of the play, each character and their interactions with one another help to reinforce the productions criticism of an unequal society. A Dolls House created the character of Nora in order to portray how women of his time period are ignorant of their situation in society. The play also attempted to show how women are taught to play ignorant. She does not realize until the end of the play that men have always controlled her. Her ignorance is apparent through everything in her life. She does not even take the fact that she has children seriously. She has a nurse take care of her children and she visits them when she feels like it. Nora plays with her children like they are some whimsical objects that delight her for one moment and bore her the next. She has no concept of how to raise children or how to be a mother at all. At the end of the play Nora admits to Helmer, how am I equipped to bring up the children (Ibsen 608). Nora is not allowed to control anything in her life. How can she possibly take care of children if she cannot even take care of herself Her controlling husband has kept her ignorant in order to have power over her. Furthermore, another occurrence in the play that exhibits Noras learned ignorance is the looming problem of the illegal loan that she took out in her fathers name. Her ignorance comes to light when she reveals her secret to Mrs. Linde. Nora believes that she has a real accomplishment that she can be proud of. In her vain attempt to try and convince Mrs. Linde that she does not have the mentality of a child, Noras ignorance becomes grossly apparent. Coupled with this incident is the scene later in the play when Krogstad confronts Nora with the fact that she committed obvious forgery in order to secure the loan. Krogstad reveals to her that he knows what she has done and that there are very real legal punishments that could destroy her life. She cannot comprehend the fact that she broke the law. Krogstad realizes this and tells Nora, Mrs. Helmer, obviously you havent the vaguest idea of what youve involved yourself in (Ibsen 594). In her ignorance she tries to create a sense of innocence for herself. She tries to reason with Krogstad that her actions were all justifiable. Nora truly believes that she did the right thing and the idea that she broke any law never crosses her mind. She saved her husbands life with that money and that is the end of that problem. Her secure world built over years of blind ignorance comes crashing down when she finally realizes that she must wake up and face the truth. A Dolls House uses its tools to show his obvious resentment of a society that is unequal and divided. Nora is ignorant because men have always made her that way. It is their means of suppression. By being ignorant of their situation, women of Ibsens time are ignorant to the problem. These two modern Chinese descendent populations followed trends in beauty from Japan. As a result, it was a successful launch that inspired furthermore expansion into the rest of China. Japan being the Paris/New York/Milan of the Asian continent, women in nearby markets are influenced by the larger market share holders. Sk-11 proven success and loyal base can be another competitive advantage. In 1999, under CEO Jager, the company was going through a colossal structural change known as O2005. Not only do these brands hold the grand majority of market share, but it is equally distributed between them. This creates a very low threat of a new entrant in the market. These brands form significantly high entry-barriers due to their popularity and loyal customer base. To make things worse, the threat of substitution for SK-II is very high in its current market because a company like Clinique is as popular as Coca-Cola is in the beverage industry. These companies have the money and other resources to create equal, if not superior products to SK-II. Finally, the bargaining power of suppliers is low. Yet, due to the competition level in the European market, the consumers have high bargaining power. Japan: One of the main reasons that Max Factor Japan had harsh time in its first 12 years under PG was because of the lack of understanding of the distribution systems in Japan. To add on, the women in Japan are extremely ‘picky’ when it comes to beauty products. Your product has to truly differentiate and gain loyalty from the consumers in order to remain as a leader of the Japanese beauty market. This reasoning explains why the threats of new entrants are very low. Japan has also slowed down in growth to 6% in the two years prior to 1999. So, not only is there an established oligopoly, but the growth is limited. Why would any company that doesn’t know the Japanese market want to even make an attempt at a suicidal mission? Due to this fierce competition within the big market share holders, innovation is crucial. Clearly, the threat of a substitute product developed by a competitor in the market is relatively high at any given point. The constant competition within the main players allows the consumer to have a high bargaining power. However, the bargaining power of supplies is low in Japan. China: The case study shows a growth rate of 28% in the previous two years (before 1999) in the beauty market. The case study also talks about a potential 30-40% annual growth in the future. Thus, the opportunity for growth is tremendous. The market share is still ‘up for grabs’. From this we can conclude the threat of new entrants is very high. China is unique because it there is an immense social class gap. A lot of mainland China is very poor. In fact, the average monthly salary of the Chinese woman is equal to a three month supply of SK-II! In the other hand, the special economic zones in China vary drastically in culture and economy. The astronomical growth in the beauty market in China takes some pressure away from competition within the bigger players. Some main European and Japanese brands are already expanding in China. Due to its early stage though, the bargaining power of both suppliers and buyers is low. Nevertheless, the risks of substitutes are high once again because of the RD power of the current competitors. It is important to have in mind that SK-II business model is to sell as a high-end product. While the very few citizens with the big bucks can provide a lot of revenue, it is also depended on SK-II being able to capture the limited higher-income society. Recommendations and conclusion: Throughout this analysis, we take a look at Porter’s five forces model to determine the pros and cons of global expansion as proposed by de Cesare. A recurring factor in the global expansion is the threat of a substitute. It is clear there exists sharp and fierce competition within and Japan and in global markets. This can be very costly. Max Factor Japan should take a very careful look at individual markets it wishes to pursue and identify distribution channels as well as a target market to have success. Learning from the mistakes of others is the cheapest way to establish a competitive strategy. Overall, I suggest that the safest and most logical route is to keep pursuing larger market share within Japan. SK-II already has a loyal consumer base, and through the innovative BIS, sales can significantly increase for a low cost and risk. In order to successfully expand into other markets, I believe that while still a significant 3% market share, it is not big enough to compete against the bigger players in the world. In Europe, a possible $10 million in sales by year four while absorbing a $1-2 million annual loss for the first few years is a risk not worth taking. Some of the world’s biggest players already dominate an educated and loyal consumer market. In addition, the distribution channels used by Max Factor Japan are completely different from the popular perfumeries in Europe. It is true that the UK is seeing massive growth in the skin-care market, but the research conducted wasn’t very clear. If success is expected out of a lot of money and effort from PG, then more in-depth research should be conducted. At last, the Chinese market is very young. There is tremendous opportunity to make money in China. It is of significant value to point out the success of SK-II in similar cultures to the rest of China such as Hong Kong and Taiwan. The fact that SK-II is a high end product, it is subject to import duties of 35-40%. Although this is true, break-even is projected within three years. Due to the differences in economies in different sectors of China, it is crucial that Max Factor Japan determines which group of people or cities it is going to target, even if it goes against the PG overall goals. Perhaps experimenting in Shanghai or Beijing would be a good trial before expanding into the rest of China. It is extremely important to not let the big European and other Japanese players conquer the huge Chinese market first; that’s if SK-II ever wants to become a world known brand.

Nobody is always perfect, every one has some strengths and some weakness, but we all should look for opportunities to convert our weakness into strength. This portfolio contains every thing about me, starting from scratch till the present and also about the future. I am hardworking and sincer. My school principal, where I studied for 9 years also believes that. [Refer to appendix- page 2] and believe in myself. I have never travelled anywhere without my parents untill one day my father deicided that I will be studying in London after my ‘o levels in India. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY FOR A DEGREE I have been studying in Delhi Public School and had english as the medium of education since my childhood. In India the education system a bit different from here in UK. The student have to decide if they wish to go for the science or the commerece stream in their 11th standards and only those students who get more than a 70% overall along with good marks in science in class 10th are allowed to opt for sicence in 11th. I was hard worker and wanted to become a engineer in future. I got 70% aggreate marks and I got 75 in science in paricular [Refer to appendix page 3], which helped in to opt for science in class 11th. Science was not as pretty as it looked. I did not realize that my apptitude was not the theories and models, instead my interest was in knowing the concepts and appling in real life. When I did not perform well, the principle gave me an option of choosing commerece, if I promised to work really hard and live up to the expectations as I will be doing two years of education in one year. I put in all my efforts worked day and night. Finally at the end the result said it all. I got [70%] almost same marks as the students studying the same course for two years in class 12th. [Refer to appendix- page 4] And 75 in business studies in particular and 64 in Economics. Therefore, getting into a Bachelors of business administration degree was because my own interst. My father being my inspiration, I decided to do something which the world should be proud of. This degree will provide me with all the skills and knowledge I need in order to become a Marketing/Finance manager. The degree is fast tracked, economical and well managed. HOW DOES THIS FIT IN YOUR LIFE CAREER PLANS The bachelors in business administration is basically the first step in the ladder to my goal in life. My other developed skills required in the future are: Planning- planning is deciding in advance what to do how to do and for whom is to do. It bridges the gap between where we are and we wish to be. I makes plans even for small things like spending the vacations with friends, planning makes me feel comfortable and relaxed. During college days I use to submit all my assignments on time. Every decision making produces a final choice. It can be an action or an opinion. It begins when we need to do something but we do not know what therefore, decision making is a reasoning process which can be rational or irrational. Writing skills- In context to communication skill, the other developed skill which I have is writing skills, I can really express my self better in the written part of speech, I have taken part in various essay writing competitions and won the first and sometimes second prize as well. I can pen down my emotions and feeling on the paper very easily, basically while writing I can really go into the depth of the topic. Team worker- He is the person who is most aware of the needs of the team, the concern and the needs of the members. Marcus Garvey and his organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), represent the largest mass movement in African-American history. Proclaiming a black nationalist "Back to Africa" message, Garvey and the UNIA established 700 branches in thirty-eight states by the early 1920s. While chapters existed in the larger urban areas such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, Garvey's message also reached into small towns across the country. His philosophy and organization had a rich religious component that he blended with the political and economic aspects. Garvey was born in 1887 in St. Anne's Bay, Jamaica. Due to the economic hardship of his family, he left school at age fourteen and learned the printing and newspaper business. He became interested in politics and soon got involved in projects aimed at helping those on the bottom of society. Unsatisfied with his work, he traveled to London in 1912 and stayed in England for two years. While in London, he read Booker T. Washington's autobiography Up From Slavery. Washington believed African Americans needed to improve themselves first, showing whites in America that they deserved equal rights. Although politically involved behind the scenes, Washington repeatedly claimed that African Americans would not benefit from political activism and started an industrial training school in Alabama that embodied his own philosophy of self-help. The Similarity of the Husband in “Cat in The Rain” and “Hills Like White Elephants”

Ernest Hemingway’s â€Å"Cat in the Rain† and â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants† describe a theme of difference between husband’s desires and wife’s desires. Both stories have the same conflict about an inconsiderate husband who always ignores his wife’s desire. The husband is not a family man.He indirectly shows that he doesn’t enjoy being with his wife and children. The male characters of Ernest Hemingway emerge as having similarities in their characters and their attitudes with their wives. For the first similarity, both husbands are identical to their inconsiderate characters. The husbands lack of attention to their wife.The American husband, George, in â€Å"Cat in the Rain† is an unresponsive person. He always takes more interest in his books than his wife. In the end of the story, the man doesn’t listen to his wife and keeps reading his book.His wife expresses many desires, for example, she wants a cat which has a s ymbol of a child and wants to eat at the table with silver spoon and candle that means she want to be a house wife. George doesn’t pay attention what his wife wants. For example, when the woman wants to grow out her hair, which symbolizes femininity, he responds, â€Å"I think you look pretty darn nice.†He directly speaks to her in an irritated way. â€Å"Shut up and get something to read†, George says when she wants the cat in the rain. Similar to George, the American husband, in â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants†, is insensitive to his wife and his baby. He says that â€Å"it’s just to let the air in. † His speech hints that he doesn’t want to have a baby.The American husband wants his wife to abort because he thinks that the unborn baby is a big obstacle for the couple’s happiness. The American husband gives his wife a cold look and doesn’t care about whatever his wife wants or talks.Furthermore, both the male characte rs lack fatherhood. While George ignores to have a baby, the American husband hints at his wife to have an abortion. The second resemblance of two male characters is that they have the same attitudes of married life towards their wives.The two husbands don’t want to settle down and don’t want to start to have a quitter way of life. In â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants†, the American husband indirectly doesn’t want to live in one place while his wife wishes to have a warm family and a child.Because of different married attitudes, their marriage’s life leads  to future separation. Although they don’t make a terrible quarrel, they are dissatisfied and will break up with each other someday. Moreov er, their relationship is about lack of freedom of the woman’s desires. In â€Å"Cat in the Rain†, George hardly listen to his wife and doesn’t care for her materialistic wants.Because he doesn’t want her to get what she wants, he probably thinks that he is the leader of their relationship and has more power than his wife. To resemble in â€Å"Hills Like White Elephant†, we obviously notice that the American husband tries to control his wife by hinting her to abort.The American husband may thinks that he can control anything. He also acts as if he is more knowledgeable and worldly than his wife. The similarities of the male characters in Ernest Hemingway’s fictions, the writer wants to show us about disagreement of the couple’s desires. Two male characters, George and the American husband, are unfeeling to their wife.They virtually don’t concern whatever their wives’ urge and want. Although two females indirectly express their desires that they want to have a baby, two husbands always pay no attention to their wife’s need.The men also has no the state of being a father, especially the American husband who circuitously tells his wife to have an abortion. Furthermore, two husbands have a rough relationship with their wife. The couple’s relationship shows us that they are about to separate because they are contrary to each other’s need. The husbands also try to decrease freedom of their wife by controlling their wife what they want her to do and to be.

According to the text the risk management process phases are establish context, identify, establish and treat risk while continuously communicating, monitoring and reviewing risk (Cooper, 2005). The premise of risk management is to uncover and understand as much as possible about risks as early in the project as possible. The more one knows about risks the easier it is to make decisions for correct responses. The alternative to risk management is crises management, which in many instances is more costly, and more time consuming. Clements amp; Gi do define a project as â€Å"an endeavor to accomplish a specific objective through a unique set of interrelated tasks and the effective utilization of resource â€Å"(Gido 4). I had many opportunities to develop a Military Retirement Ceremony, so I decided to approach it as a project risk management plan. At the time I did not know it but we were using the project risk management approach discussed in the text to address the risk associated with the event. The Military Retirement Ceremony project planning began the same as most projects do by determining the objectives. The objectives are described in terms of deliverable, schedule and budget. The sponsor and the customer must agree upon the scope of any project.
